I think you missed the point (no offense). I never exactly devoted my life to God, but I DO believe that there is a God looking down upon us all. I DO NOT believe in a hell nor a devil nor a 'Virgin Mary' nor in Adam & Eve and I never got into the Bible and I don't go to church (I pray at home). I choose to believe in my God because doing so means that I can always believe someone loves me and cares. I don't hate anyone because of their religion and I appreciate that you didn't try to bash us all. I do good because I truly believe a superior being wants me to. You do good because you know it's the right thing to do. Whats the difference? As long as it makes us all better people, what's the difference?
So I guess you could say my answer is that believing in God gives me comfort.

I don't base my life on a religion.
I base my life on my belief.
Belief comes from what you know, what you feel, what is obvious to you.
What I know, when lived becomes a "knowing"
A knowing solidifies into " I know what I know"
A "knowing" can not be proved, does not need to be.
When I know, I know I know.
Material evidence is only atoms in a certain configuration, which can change, and does change.
Logical proof is based on logic, which is the mind playing gymnastics.
If you have no "faith", no "belief", or no "religion", that is your choice.
If people do have faith, belief or religion that is their choice.
You live your life to the best you can be, I hope.
Allow others to do the same.
Nobody has to "prove" anything to anybody.

Exactly. I mean, why would we do it if there was no proof? People assume that because religion can't be proven TO THEM, that we don't have any proof.
You're right, that faith is a belief not based on logical or material evidence... but it is based on evidence.... evidence of the Spirit.
For an analogy... do you love your parents/spouse/friends? Your love for them can't be materially proven... although logic can support your assertion, it can't PROVE that you love them. But you still KNOW that you love them.
You are the only one who can see into your heart... so there is proof there for you alone. That is where I find my proof for religion.

How can you devote your life to anything if you don't look!
The most dumbest thing a person can do is make a statement of belief or faith, and yet have never tested their thoughts or questioned what they think they know with the word of God.
Ask a question and see if I can prove with reasonableness what the truth is?

I have devoted my life to religion and feel there is a lot of solid groundwork to stand upon. Perhaps you want to give it a try? We are now in the third quest for the historical Jesus and I think we are finally landing much closer to home.
See N.T. Wright "Jesus and the Victory of God" or any of his other works in the Origin of Christianity series.

My life is not devoted to "religion". My life belongs to Jesus Christ. Whether I can "prove" something to another has no bearing on it. I believe in Jesus, I believe in the bible, and I believe God has my entire existence in His keeping.
That I know all these things is good enough for me. I don't feel compelled to convince anyone else.

All that being said...if that's the case then none of us should ever leave our home..because we have no proof that we will come back in safely....or drive a car we have no proof that we want get killed before we can get home....or ride an airplane....fear of crashing ...or taking a bath...could slip in tub and hit our head...and fall and drown.....or go to sleep...we have no guarantee that we want die in our sleep...yet everyone does it every day....it all boils down to faith and belief and there's no way to get around it...you'll just have to live with it.

Okay let me be simple with this answer, if I live my life believing in God, and am happy, then I die and there is nothing beyond the grave, I have lost nothing for my life was happy. If you live as if there is no God and are happy, but when you die you find that you were wrong...well you see it is like insurance, you never want to have to use your Insurance policy but you pay for it anyway. Then when you need it you have it. But Jesus is more than just Insrance, he is assurance. For just as He died and rose again so will we if we follow HIM.

I will say faith because it is true. I believe God is there. So many of my fears have vanished within seconds of asking for God to calm my fears. We has a school shooting at our school 2 years ago. I was terrified. My heart was racing, my palms were sweating, and I was crying really bad. I asked for God to calm me. I was fine after that. Less than a second after finishing my prayer my tears stopped and my faced dried, my hands dried, and my heart slowed. That is one of the reasons I am sure that God is there.

Sure, there's not much in the way of physical evidence, but we're not talking about physical things now are we?
When you're talking about spiritual things, you need a spiritual method of research and validation. If you can't wrap your head around seeing beyond physical methods of research and validation, then it's just simply something you can't understand.
