The Russian claim is frivelous at best. It will end up coming down to which continental shelf the underwater mountain range connects to.
That being said, by the time it becomes economically feasible to drill for gas or oil there (could be 50 years), who knows who will be in power and how desperate the energy situation could be.
Russia throwing a flag on a piece of land is like me pissing on a tree and then saying it's mine.
PS Canadian Armed forces are very well trained and equipped with a proud histroy (The Devil's Brigade) but would not last 5 minutes against the Russians
PSS no need to mention the French connection when trying to defend your countries millitary. It's like a US citizen mentioning we have Girl Scouts

I'm quite aware of Canada's military, having been on maneuvers with 2PP, one of your most decorated units. But, Russia has enough problems trying to exploit and sell its own domestic supplies of oil because the supporting infrastructure dates from the Bolshevik's "Get it done without worrying about competence" days of the Soviet Union. And their armed forces are simply not up for such a venture. A quick review of Russia's military history will show they will fight to the death for defense of the "Rodina" (the Holy Motherland). But, the Arctic region of Canada is not part of that motherland.
As to any help from other NATO members for Canada in such an endeavor, I wouldn't count on it. Even when NATO committed to its sole military action in Europe (Serbia and Kosovo) the Canadians, British and Americans flew over 90% of all the air combat missions.

There will be no war because the world's governments have been selling our nothern oil reserves to aliens for years. The magnetism of the north pole disguises the UFOs. They land at the pole and long tubes extend into the earth's crust to soak up the precious oil. In exchange for oil the Earth recieves upgrades in technology that are slowly released to the public, ie the internet, satalite TV, and Ding Dongs.

Its on already the Russians are deploying batteries nuclear tipped penguins as I type!!
Hopefully this message gets out before the "Polar Bear Legions" of Free Russia find my secret location and close me down.
The Russian Oil industry above ground in Russia is in chaos, they have not got the equipment or resources to exploit any underwater deposits.

The problem seems to be Russia that is claiming squatters rights to that oil. I believe it's something that needs real serious negotiation, because without a fair and equitable share for each of the claimants, it should stay where it is.

You are forgetting Denmark, Norway, and the United States . . . we all have claims though none of us has been so bold as to place an underwater metal flag on what we suspect to be the natural extension of our techtonic (sp?) plate. Those crazy Russians.

I doubt a war will start. Who knows how far the Russians will get with their so called claim. Maybe the US should clam the Moon as they put a flag their first.

Oh probably, but that will be too bad. That's the only reason countries seem to go to war now, for oil.
