Yah baking soda helps because it neutralizes the acids that bacteria produce which eat away at your teeth and gums. But you dont do either/or. Brush with toothpaste and then mix some baking soda in water and swish it around.

You can do it, and it works well, but it tastes kind of gross. I use Tom's of Maine natural toothpaste. It comes in a baking soda variety. I think Arm & Hammer makes it's own toothpaste now also. You might try that.

I have been using Arm and Hammer for years. My hygienist noted that my teeth were very clean when I went to the dentist for my 6 months visit.
