Hmmm...
There are two scenarious here:
1. If the dead person was not expecting to die, that is a sudden blow, then that person might not even know they are dead. Therefore, we have 'ghosts' that haunt places, because to them, the concept of time is lost and they donot know or understand their situation. SO in this case, there is no awareness. How do I know this? From mediums that can converse with ghosts.
2. According to many N.D.E ( Near Death Experiences), people are aware of their physical body being left behind, when they are dying. They are not aware of the 'dying' process, cuz there is no such thing as a process. Even in the most violent experinces, people have said that they knew of NO PAIN, but just peace. So when the soul exits the body, it experiences no discomfort/pain/agitation/ uneasiness. Its as natural as breathing. :)
Hope that answers the question.

My thoughts on this is that it is immediate. But once the connection of the soul to the brain has been severed awareness will be gone, leaving only consciousness rather expanding outward towards infinity, reconnecting with every finite being in the infinite world( like a drop of water to the ocean).

Does time matter after you leave your earthly shell? I spent days in the presence before coming back (I should say being sent back) to find it had only been moments here... A day with the Lord is like a year, and a year like a day... time is different there, space is different there, you are unbounded and there is no need of directions up down, etc. Words are solid gold, voices are like thunder and lightning, you hear not with ears, see not with eyes. You are totally aware and filled with all knowledge... before you can ask it is answered in our mind.

We are dead until the resurrection onto a cleansed earthly paradise.
This is the resurrection Jesus spoke of when he said there will be a resurrection of the rightous and unrightous.
What do you think the purpose of Armageddon is for? to clear the way for paradise restored like Jesus promised in the "our father" prayer. he promised this to the evil doer on the cross next to him.
We are asleep in death until the ressurection onto paradise earth. there Are very few going to heaven, those that do go to heaven are a privileged class to reign with christ over this paradise earth these ones will be ressurected immediatly following there earthly death in to the heavenly realm. the rest of the faithful will await their ressurection until after the effect of armageddons war to clear the way.
billion and billions of people are not floating around on clouds playing harps. the Earth was created for humans and gods pupose has not changed.

To be absent from the body is to be Present with the Lord. If you are living right, saved and sanctified (clean, no sin in your life) you will wake up the split second you die, in Heaven. But without being saved, sanctified & living right, you will wake up to burning and screaming in Hell until Judgement day.

Not a believer. But, I do know there is life after death. 2 weeks ago my father died. He came to me at work. I couldn't see him, but I could sense him there. We spoke for a few minutes. He left and I knew he was gone. I couldn't "sense" him on our plane anymore. I knew he was gone. My phone rang and I was told my father had just died. I said I know. He was just here.
Awareness is instantaneous.

depends on how fast the EMS start applying resuscitation procedures. IF they wait to long, you will never be aware again.

I believe that upon death ( even sometimes before it if we loose consciousness ) we are met by our loved ones and guides who help us journey to our new home
although I believe that if we choose ... we can remain close to this earth for a time ( 3 days or so ) .. this is just an observation on my part
