I have a 10 gallon tank which will soon be home to one small ruykin goldfish. To help with the mess from the goldfish i would like to know if i could get away with adding in a bottom feeder of some kind. I dont know if they live at the same temperature or coexist well. Any help on whether that would work and if so what kind of bottom feeder to get?

if you are keeping your goldfish in unheated water, then i wouldn't recommend the bottom feeder in your tank. usually those are tropical fish who need about 78 degrees farenheit in the tank.

they will get along fine, and your goldfish will do well in water with heat, but make sure the tank is heated BEFORE you put him in there. place the bag he is in for a little while to come up to temperature.

i have had many goldfish of different types with my tropical fish and they have done very well. but the thing you need to make sure of is getting a heater for your tank, because many of the 10 gallon kits don't come with them. they are about 10 bucks or less, since you only need one to heat 10 gallons.

good luck!

Goldfish usually work well with bottom feeders, since each will keep distance from each other.

When I was younger, and had goldfish, we had a cleaner shrimp. Neither the shrimp or the goldfish were bothered, and our tank was slightly cleaner! You can ask anyone working at the store where you purchased (or will purchase) your goldfish about other types of bottom feeders you can choose from.

I would say that "Annie" would make a good goldfish parent, since she's got a correct answer.
