I know that Hawaii is one of the states in USA.
One of my friends is Thai, she told me that she had a very bad time to get through customs in San Francisco every time she went there to visit her boyfriend so she felt very bad about this.

I would like to know whether it's as hard in Hawaii to get pass the customs.

P.S. sorry if this is a stupid question.

My experience with US customs is that it depends on which customs agent you got. Some of them are just *******. Your friend needs to have her paperwork done correctly and not try and bring in anything she isn't supposed to - then she shouldn't have a problem.

Also consider that the US is sensitive to illegal aliens coming into the country. The best thing for her to do is just say she is here on vacation. If she says she's coming in to visit her bf, that might set off alarms?

You do Not need a passport to go from the mainland 48 contiguous states (Alaska too!) to Hawaii, nor do you need one to return.

No you do NOT go through Customs either way. Standard airport security yes, Customs no. That is true even for foreign nationals who start their US journey in the US. For example a Japanese national leaving from San Francisco for Honolulu will not go through Customs either at SFO or in HNL. Once the have passed through Customs upon entering the country, that is it. They can go anywhere in the 50 states without visiting Customs again.

Might be all that contraband she is trying to get through.........

From my experience it seems to depend on where you're coming from. When I come from Japan they always send me through the Green line. However, when I come from Vietnam, they always send me to the Red Line where I always get inspected. When I do get inspected though the agents are very courteous. This is of course my experience so your friend's experience may be different.

It really depends on where you're coming from (since some countries are higher risk for smuggling) and which agent you get. I've found that if you're cool and calm, they tend to be the same but if you're trying to rush them or are agitated, they will act the same way.

Good luck and happy travels!
