The good, old, traditional beef stew! I use "Feather Steak", brown it in a frying pan first and transfer to a plate, brown which ever veg. that's being used, i.e. carrots, onions, swede, parsnip etc. (this is recommended in the manual I got with mine) as this softens and seasons them (by the way, don't add salt until the last knockings as for some reason it messes things up), but you can add pepper, garlic, etc.

Put it back in your slow cooker with your stock/water, gravy cubes etc., and go away and leave it - 12 - 18 hours - it melts in your mouth! Come home from work, or wherever, starving hungry, walk through the door and, believe me, you can smell the aroma! All you have to do is dish it up! NOTHING BETTER! And it tastes even better when you re-heat it the next day.

Get an extra-large slow cooker and you can live on it for days!

Cheap, effective and yummy!

I use mine mostly in winter to make beef stew or soups.

I also cook ham in it quite often. All you have to do is put it into the pot and leave (the longer the better) for a medium joint I would cook for around 6 hours min.

A cheap beef brisket joint is also good, again just leave it for 4 - 6 hours and it comes out fantastic, great for a midweek roast.

I would recommend experimenting, they are great and very convenient especially if you work all day. Try not to add too much liquid as they don't need extra.

Chuck roast

Get a tbsp of oil hot in frypan. Drop in roast, season with minced garlic (a lot), seasoned salt, lot of fresh ground cracked pepper. Flip the roast and do the same to the other side.

Add 1/2 c water to bottom of slow cooker, add 2 beef boullion cubes. Add roast. Cover with sliced onions (2). Close the lid and cook on high for 4 hours or low for 6-7 hrs.

If you wish to add veggies, add an hour on high or two hours on low before the meat will be done.

2-3 potatoes cut in 1/8s
1 bag baby carrots (1 lb)
1/2 lb washed mushrooms (if desired)
Several stalks of celery, cut in 3rds.

When things look done, turn off the cooker and drain the liquid into a frying pan. Heat to boiling, and add a cornstarch/water mixture until it's the right consistency for your gravy. Add salt & pepper to taste.

I cook my beans and meats overnight. I cook chilli and thick soups and dip if I plan on eating it that day.

Slow cookers are an excellent thing to fill up and forget about. You can find many cookbooks w/ideas on recipes for your slow cooker. Good luck.

i use it for a lot of things.
pot roast/veggies
roast pork
chicken
simmering spaghetti sauces
throw a really tough cut of beef in the slow cooker and leave it on low overnight - comes out nice and tender everytime!
beef stew
chicken stew
soups
the slow cooker/crockpot doesn't heat up the kitchen on those hot summer days! and in the winter, coming into the house on a cold day and getting a whiff of whatever meal is simmering in that old crock pot - well - now i'm hungry!
anyway whatever you are making, throw some dinner rolls in the oven and heat them through and you have a wonderful meal!

I have a large one which I use cheaper cuts of meat for pot roasts and bacon joints, also for stews, casseroles and soups - made in bulk so that I can then freeze.

I have a small one which I use for things like chick peas, dried beans and beetroot - the things that are best given a long slow cook and just enough for one or two people.
