What is a good (normal?) bedtime for a first grader? Second grader? Third grader? And does it change much on weekends?

If you read alot of childcare books they suggest that young children need 10-12 hours sleep and I agree. So it largely depends on when they have to get up in the morning. I had an 8pm bedtime for my kids which meant cleanup of room at 7:30, in pjs and in bed for story by 8. Lights were out usually before 8:30. The routine is important as everyone winds down cleaning up and then relax while reading or sometimes just chatting a bit. They seemed ready to sleep after our little routine. I think children do well in an environment that supplies consistency, but not too authoritarian. I was a bit more relaxed at the weekends, but not more than a half hour or so. I needed my time alone as well. My daughter's kids follow a similar schedule. Her 3 yearold goes at 7:30 and her first-grader at 8. Well-rested kids do better at school. My son had going-to-bed problems when his boy was 3-5. Very, very late. They were unable to take control, gave up and let him stay up til he fell asleep on the sofa. Teachers at school reported that he was cranky, tired and misbehaving. They worked on the problem, solved it and now all is well. He needed to be "retrained" to go to sleep at a reasonable hour as he had become used to falling asleep at 11 or even later! Sleep is a habit and good habits need to be developed consciously.

I would say around 7:30, 8 is good for weekdays for a first grader. Raise the time by 15 minutes each year. So for third grade the time would be 7:45, 8:15, depending on what time you choose. On weekends it should be an hour later than on weekdays. So if their bedtime is 8 let them go to bed at 9. For me I could stay up as late as I wanted on weekends, but that was me.

I hope I could help!

My girls have had a bedtime of 8 oclock from pretty much birth. They are 6 and 4 now and still go to bed at 8. I dont have any fighting with them because this is the way it has always been and they know what to expect. My youngest especially is really cranky if she doesnt get enough sleep so it is really important she gets in bed on time or she whines all the next day lol. When my oldest gets to be around 9 her bed time will go up to 9. If they get good grades by the time they are 15 then will be allowed to go to bed when they want to. On the weekends they still go to bed at 8 unless we happen to be gone.

I guess it just depends on when the child has to get up in the morning to either catch the bus or just make it to class. My daughter is starting kindergarten this fall and her bus comes at 7:00 so I have to get her to bed early enough to where she'll have that eight hour sleep that's required for children to be fully functional in class. I put my daughter to bed at 8:00 and she generally falls asleep around 9:00 after reading a few stories. She has to wake up at 5:30 to wake up completely, get dressed, get her breakfast, and be ready to catch the bus. I don't change bedtime for the weekends so she stays on the routine but I do let her sleep in. I'll pretty much keep it the same for when she's in first and second grade as well.

I think kids need 10 ++ hours of sleep -
I put my soon to be 3rd grade to bed at 9 (start at 8:30)
she will wake at 7:10

My other two kids followed that they are now 11 and 13
they know they need to be asleep by 10 - or they will be dead with the 6 am alarm.

I always let my kids up late on weekends - and summer.

My son is going in to first grade, and he goes to bed at 8. You should probably figure out what time your child has to get up in the morning to have enough time to get ready for school. Then figure that at that age, hes probably going to need a good 9-10 hours, sometimes more (ask your doctor or keep track of sleeping habbits and when he wakes up on his own without being tired) of sleep, and count backward to get the bed time. My son has to be up by 6 to be ready on time, therefore 6 - 10 hours = 8pm.

First grader: 8:00 on school days. 8:30 to 9:00 on weekends.

Second grader: 8:00 to 8:30 on school days. 9:00 on weekends.

Third grader: 9:00 on school days. 10:00 on weekends.

Fourth- 6th grade: 9:30 on school days. 11:00 on weekends.

I think the rest is your choice.

When my children were small - they always went to bed at the same time; no matter what day, time of the year or on vacation. Children need to develop good sleeping habits and changing them (depending on age) only confuses them.

start with 8PM for a first grader. keep it the same time every night to keep the routine, except for special treats. remember, they need 8 hours sleep every night to do well in school.
