Get OpenOffice, it is a free office suite (like Microsoft Office) and it can open, edit and save as Microsoft Office file types:

You can go to Microsoft site and download trial version of Office 2007 which consists of Excel, but once trial runs out you will have to buy and there is no way of uninstalling and trying to install again.
