I learned this when we lived near an Air Force Base. Things were on a "need to know" basis. Whenever someone asks a question I consider to be rude or intrusive, I ask them why do they need to know this. They usually answer "Oh, I was curious". I come back with-"That's what I thought". That is the end of that part of the conversation.

Most people who ask that question are just curious, they are not trying to be rude. Maybe it's their way of starting a conversation. Trying to find some common ground to start talking about. It's just like some people don't want to answer the question, "How old are you?" I'm 61 years old and I am English, Irish and Scottish. Too many people get offended at simple questions, when people are just trying to be friendly and start a conversation.

I was out with my nephew once and some old lady asked me, "What is he?" (he was young, only about 1 year old). I knew exactly what she was talking about because I'm white and he is obviously Spanish. I just said, "Oh, he's a boy." smiled, and then turned around and walked away. I agree that it is very rude to ask someone about their nationality right off the bat like that. If I were you I would just say, "I'm a girl/boy." But make sure you say exactly what you aren't. I'm a woman so I would say, "I'm a man." That ought to confuse them.

Depends on whether you want to become friends with them or you want them to go away forever.

Rude: what difference does that make? should I ask you if you're retarded?

Nice: I'm 100% filipino, and you?

You're going to get asked, obviously, so the best choice is just to answer the question and remember that they aren't the ones who asked it 100 times before and who made it so annoying for you.

Yes it is annoying, however it is probably a "icebreaker". If you really find it annoying instead of telling the person ask them, "does it make a difference in talking to me?" Then at least it will open a new line of conversation.

No. It is fun to explore the diversity of human origins, recognizing the contributions that each has made. Don't be annoyed or ashamed to say that your heritage is Filipino; it is just as good as any other.

what is annoying is when people answer the question of their ethnicity in fractions like "Im 1/8 irish, 2/3 english, 2/6 indian, 4/8 black yada yada yada"

Its not that its a dumb question its just that you don't like to answer it. The easiest response would be to tell them that your full Filipino. That would be easier than causing an argument.

Ask them why they need to know. This avoids answering the question and puts them in the awkward position. If they give you a valid answer, then you may choose to answer them.

I get asked all the time, but I can understand where they are coming from, since I'm not the kind of person you see everyday. I'm half Filipino and half other Asian.
