First and foremost -- become knowledgeable about the tattoo artist that you select. Check out the shop beforehand: look for cleanliness and organization. Ask if s/he has a portfolio of custom work to get an idea of his/her skills.
Is your tattoo going to be visible most of the time? Will this impact your work in anyway? Some employers really frown on body art in the workplace.
Consider the reasons why you selected this particular tattoo. Is it something that you can live with for the rest of your life?

Tattoos are completely permanent. You can't rub or scratch them off. The thing to consider is where exactly you want to put it. You should put it in a place that you can see clearly, but can still obscure if you want to. Imagine going to a job interview and having a tattoo all over your hand. It doesn't make a good impression. Put it on your upper arm, if possible, so that you can't see it when you wear a T-shirt or a jacket.
When you grow older, you might not want ink all over your arm.
If you're only 27, I think that you can get a tattoo if you really want one, but if you're unsure, don't get one. Seriously.

you should definitely consider not getting a tribal tattoo!!!
unless you belong to a tribe or have an ancestry that has a tradition of tribal tattoos but 99% of the people who have tribal tattoos have no tribal ties and is just silly and a waste of tattoo space. is there nothing else that you could get that is relatable to you and your life? tribal and people's names are the most commonly covered up tattoos. DON'T DO IT!

it'll be there for ever! Get something that means a lot to you and you alone. Or you can Do what everyone else does and get a tribal or a piece of somebody elses art. But if your going to do that you might as well put a McDonalds or Pepsi logo there.

These are the basic things you need to consider before getting a tattoo:
Do I really want this?
Can I handle the pain?
Can I live with this till the day I die?
Will I need to cover it up for work/regular life?
Do I have the funds to cover it?

I don't like tribal tatoos. lol. OKAY OKAY.. anyways
When I got my tatoos done...I thought about
-The risks
-The fact that I have to live with it til the day I die
-Do I want to cover it? Does it look skanky? stupid?
-Why I want to get it. Is there a purpose? Maybe to remind you of a lost love one? anything?
ermm... yup. that's it.. ;)

Consider you will have the design on you for the rest of your life. Or in my case you decide about 2 weeks later that you don't like your tattoo so you get it removed which cost close to $1000!!!!!

Think about if you want it forever. I'm having two of mine removed. Think about down the road if you have to have them removed how much it will cost to have it removed as opposed to the cost of the tattoo itself. I thought I wanted mine forever..but have grown up and changed my mind. But if its something you really want then do it...just think about it and do it for the right reason..don't do it as an impulse thing. Otherwise..you probably will regret it.
