I moved out of New York about ten years ago; I loved living in Manhattan, but couldn't even afford the slums any more.
You might be able to find affordable rents in Queens or Brooklyn, or across the river in New Jersey -- Hoboken, where I lived for a time, is nice but was getting quite expensive when I left, Jersey City and Newark are probably still affordable, just a few minutes by PATH (Port Authority Trans-Hudson) train to Manhattan.

NYC is a very expensive place to live. You need to definatelly plan ahead for this move. I assume you do not have a job lined up nor knowledge of where to first move to. You did not mention why you want to move. Do you know of anyone who will put you up until you get on your feet? That would be the best circumstance. You don't say what your work experience has been or how old you are, what kind of finances you have saved up or anything. If you go with no experience at anything, no money, no acquaintances, no plan whatsoever, then you are not ready to move. You will end up on the streets like you see in the movies. If you have all of the above, w/o the acquaintance, you might want to check out Brooklyn or Queens to live. If you can, get a friend or relative to move with you, you will be in much better shape. As far as a job, you may want to start with a temporary agency in your field of experience. If you have visions of living right in NYC with the glamour and excitement you see on TV, with a perfect job waiting to find you, I am afraid it much more than likely will not happen that way. I would say you have a 99.9% of finding a job that will pay enough to even live there on your own. It is brutal there. Very competative. Dog devour dog. And that is with all of the positives stated above. Think about it very carefully and plan it out with everything that could possibly go wrong, will, and then some. Good Luck!

Theres are all different types of jobs in NYC just as long as you have some skills then you should be fine. You should try uptown part of the Bronx such as Morris park or pelham parkway parts of queens and Brooklyn. you can even try westchester4 county as well because its not that far from Manhattan. There is also a train called metro north to lead you to higher counties with that said you might be able to find some apartments for cheap unless you have ALOTTA cash then live in the trump towers or buy a big house in Long Island. the saying is true if you can make it here then you should be able to make it anywhere.

There are plenty of jobs available in the whole NYC area. If your looking to start out, I'd recommend living somewhere in the suburbs, preferably near a train station, where commuting is very easy from there. You name the job, either its in NYC itself or out in the suburbs. Theres anything from doctors, lawyers, and pharmisicts, to secretarties, buisness managment, and computer science jobs, theres retail, and just about any job you can think of and then some. I wouldnt recommend making a move though, until you have found a job.

I live in NYC and the job market is tough right now. I would look for a job first and then worry about a place to live.
As far as places to move, Manhattan is ridiculously priced, so look for places in Brooklyn and Queens. Especially Astoria (Queens) - good place to live with reasonable rent. If possible, convince a friend to move with you to share the rent.
If you are rich - disregard. Move into midtown and enjoy life.

In NYC, it's all about the money. If you could show them the money, they could give you what you want. Best to come to NYC with skills, and is possible, contacts. It's a big city, 8.4 million, and if you hesitate your head will spin silly. There are, of course, Silicon Valley, corporations in NYC. Maybe you could get a job that way.

Central Park, Subway station.
All cities in the USA, have similar jobs. When you are ready to look for a job, go to an Employement Agency.
Many agencies post jobs on Moster.com.
Make sure your resume is up-to-date.
According to what I recently read, expect to pay about $1,200.00+/- for rent in Manhattan.
