When I think of Russia I think of beautiful churches and palaces, but more importantly great friends. The people I met in Russia were the most kind-hearted and generous I have ever come across. On the downside, many Russians have to struggle greatly to survive on meager wages or pensions, while crime and corruption flourishes especially in the big cities.

First think I think of is : "Russian Five" - Detroit Red Wings - Be afraid! (Which Hockey is usually at the top of my mind)

Another cliche' is the way "Moose & Squril" sound from "Bullwinkle's" villians Borus & Natashia.

I don't know any Russian's personally, but they seem fascinating. I saw on TV that there has been a shortage of men in Russia since the 1950's. This makes the men pampered and spoiled which takes away my impression of the "Russian Five."

Very nice people. A great country. I have met some of them and they are as we all are. Some good, some bad. It is not an evil empire. Just another country trying its best to get along in this crazy mixed up world.
People all over the world are all pretty much the same if we let them be.
I think the zealots and government people are the cause of most problems not the "everyman/everywoman"

When someone says Russia, I think to myself:"Родина-мать зовyт!" In other words: "The motherland is calling!" I was born in Russia, so I consider it my homeland, the motherland. I think Russia has some governmental problems, but besides that, I love Russia!!!

Oh, and vodka and potatoes! You can never have enough potatoes and basically potato juice(vodka)!!!

Russia is the soul of Slavic nations, and a Mother to all the smaller ones. Being Serbian, to me it means warmth, love, and sadness, too, but the kind that I understand. It means poetry that my mother used to tell me at bedtime, music and songs that bring tears to my eyes when I hear them, the soft spoken language that is reassuring and soothing. It means friends, literature, ballet, films, onion-domed churches and vast spaces.

To me it means "home"
Even though i live in NJ now.
This a country of tragical history, endured many battles with millions lives lost, stopped Mongolian invasion, so it did not spread to Europe, stopped Germans, and Napoleon earlier.
The country with great literature, music and art.
With many wonderful, great people,
who sacrificed their lives for others.
But almost destroyed, from outside and inside as well,
Beautiful, and tragic place.
I never drink and smoke, by the way, neither any on my friends...
Your question sure encouraged many ignorant answers, though.
