In the last 10 years, NYC has changed. Today most neighborhoods, not all, are relatively safe. Try Greenpoint, Brooklyn, Ocean Parkway, Brooklyn, or Rego Park, Queens.

In New York, there is no such thing as finding a cheap place to live..because, there aren't any! Even the bad area's run about $1,200 to $2000 per month for just a one bedroom
box!

You might want to move on pass new york and try area's in Connecticut..It is expensive there too, but at least you can find reasonable apartments in Meridan, Southington, and outside of new britian...

If you still are considering moving to the city that never sleeps, then you might want to consider having a room-mate and money for days!!! because you will need it to pay for your utilites, food, washing clothes outdoors, there are no washer and dryers in apartments, not unless you rent a condo or something to that effect.

And remember New York gets COLD in the Winter..VERY COLD!! so come prepared. Or, and you have to learn to travel on the subways, buses, and use the gypsy cabs because the yellow cabs will rip you off!!

You can try Harlem alot of people are moving there because of the low rent tares and its close proximity to midtown. it has improved alot also alot of business are opening up there. also further uptown in the north Bronx like co-op city and parts of Brooklyn as well as queens. Queens is prolly your best bet because it has alot of cultures living relatively good side by side and the rent isn't stratospheric

Bay Ridge, Brooklyn is an relatively inexpensive, nice place with express buses that will take you to the city.

Most areas in NYC are nice now.
