i bougtht an s-video cable so i could watch stuff from my laptop and put it onto the tv?

but nothing is happening when i plug the cable in both sides. do i need something else as well

You need to do two things. Go into your laptop's display settings and enable the TV as a second display.

Then set your TV to take it's input from the S-Video port.
