It's problematic in that there must have been a point in time when man's predecessors were as much like animals as they were like men. Perhaps God looks out for the Chimpanzees too. Of course if you reject Darwinism then there is no problem beyond the abandonment of objective and rational thinking. Perhaps man created God when he evolved the mental capacity to do so. That seems possible to me but it doesn't strike me as an idea that might be very popular with the Vatican.

Penfold, you make the mistaken assumption that religious faith is bound by reason, quite the contrary. Religious faith is a kind of refuge from reason, 'God's plan' is one collosal cop-out by all those who espouse it. If we are to act in ways that are supportive of the continued well-being of the human race we cannot believe that no matter what we do God has a plan for the earth because to do so would negate the possibility of you or I having any impact on the ultimate fate of the world.

And don't be silly, God doesn't look out for chimps, only presidents who look like them.

Perhaps man recognized there was a God when he had the mental capacity to do so.You must have a very limited view on what many believers actually believe. Many spiritualist think God initiated the big bang and then allowed life to evolve over eons. To us that is much more of a creation then for God to say 'poof' there it is. This belief that science and religion do not contradict each other is not new, but has been going on since the middle 1800's.

A good question, in that if He's so jealous, why did he let Baal worship go on for so long but have a holy cow when the Israelites worshiped a golden calf? I realize answering a question with a question doesn't further your inquiry much, but your presumption of His existence, a priori, is misguided, all the more so if you suggest that a creator of the entire universe would be interested in such a pathetic life form as homo sap. Surely if He exists, which He does not, He's got much more interesting toys to mess with somewhere in the Andromeda, if not elsewhere in this galaxy. As such your question is rhetorical, academic, and moot. Cheer up, we're still a bit more evolved than pond scum, and that ain't bad.

I like monkeys
and Hairy gorillas
funny chimps
And other primates
Shaving your nuckles is so fun to do
It makes me go woop-oop woop-oop-oop!

The only ape I hate
Lives up on Capitol Hill
A dirty vicious baboon
He makes decisions obscene
His favorite color is green
I want to pinch him till he squeals.
