For about a week now out of nowhere I have been getting this random taste in my mouth which can almost exactly be described as mothballs. At first I thought it was in my head, but now I can certainly say it is not. It's really disgusting and it comes and goes randomly throughout the day wherever I am. Is this a symptom of anything? Should I see a doctor?

It's very odd...if it is a mouth bacteria of some sort I have no idea how I got it. I am very hygenic flossing, brushing, and rinsing with mouthwash twice a day. I just hope it isn't leading up to something more serious than a bad taste.

It could be coming from your stomach. You mention that your oral hygiene is good but, do you have regular dental checkups ?? There could be an underlying physical cause. It wouldn't hurt to call your Doc and your Dentist. I hope that this helps.

from the internet

The mothball-like odour is caused by mouth bacteria and it is difficult to eliminate it by rinsing with over-the-counter mouthwashes. This strong odour often is found between the teeth but even with flossing it tends to come back quickly.
He should gently scrape his tongue and then brush it with the mouthwash. If this is not successful, go to a dentist or clinic.

Phantom scents and tastes could be an underlying symptom of a bigger problem. I think it would be on the safer side for you to see a doctor.

Are you currently taking medication? I know from experience that certain antibiotics can cause a metallic taste in your mouth.

You're not pregnant are you? Sometimes (apparently) you get a nasty taste in your mouth then. I got a nasty taste in my mouth ages ago and managed to pin point it to the eye drops I was using for a cyst on my eyelid (sounds gross I know!). Or maybe if you're using new toothpaste or mouthwash? xx

I could be just something that you've eaten sometime ago and it is still in your system. But I would see a doctor.
