The marines are actually optimized to work in cooperation with naval, airborne, and other ground troops - don't let the name trick you into thinking they're just amphibious assault units. They tend to go in first because they're more trained in coordinating between the multiple branches and the first strike usually involves aerial and naval bombardments.
