Why do some of you atheist come on the religion & spirituality section? I don't mean to offend you, and I know that you have just as much authority to be on here as anyone else, but if you don't believe in religion and God, why bother answering questions that have to do with it? It sometimes makes the questioner mad, AND I would think it would just annoy you to answer a question about something or someone you don't believe.

Serious answers, without snippy comments, please.
I'm serious...

So we can field questions directed to atheists.

Religion is a very touchy subject and most often, unless one is a scholar discussing it with another scholar, as a subject, it can promote very heated feelings. For example if a fundamentalist of any religion posted a question, or even a religionist, about the existence of "God" it would attract the attention of an Atheist, in turn if an atheist posted a question as to the non existence of God, an immediate stone flinging would occur. People are not satisfied with what they themselves believe or don't . . they feel they have to lead another down their path no matter what.
I don't think atheists give that much of a darn whether a God exists or not, and they fully have a right to feel that way. On the other hand religionists become very upset if the whole world does not accept the concept of a God.
Yet, the mere question of religion is alike striking a match while sitting on a pool of gasoline.
My believe is this : If one believes in the existence of a "God", fine, but don't proselytize about it to me,
If someone chooses NOT to believe in God that is also fine with me.
To raise swords or stones or hurl offenses toward one another because of the difference about believing or not
is absolutely STUPID, because the fact is that the creation of a God is man-made. I don't think "GOD has presented himself and said, "hey, here's proof, now you have it, so settle down and believe!" So why the big ado about theory? To me that's a waste of time and energy that could go into something already Founded, not merely theorized.
I am Buddhist, and yet the mere mention of what that philosophy means, (it is not a religion, but a philosophy about life, being), has struck some people in ways that I have been viciously attacked, even called a satanist! Now Buddhism is a philosophy which deals through compassion, empathy and sympathy and one's own path in life . . it does not interfere with anyone, yet I have been treated with scorn for it . . However, I really don't care to involve myself with ignorance, if I can help it . . so whatever other people think is okay by me, of course, short of having a rock thrown at my head for having made a choice that suits me. I do not like to be proselytized to, however . . to me that's like force feeding a goose for the slaughter, then the eating. Pretty much live and let live, understand, P.C.?

free speech my friend, free speech. just like you have every right to post answers in the science section.

on a personal note, just because someone is atheist doesn't mean they're not spiritual. i'm an atheist but am a practicing buddhist also (we don't believe in a creator god). for me there has to be a compromise. i look at the world and use logic and reason to comprehend it. i close my eyes and meditate on the things that science can't answer like the the existence of good and evil, meaning of life, reincarnation, etc. you can't live life with black/white answers only. everything happens in the grey areas.

when you have an open mind you notice the truth in different things. when you have a closed mind, all you do is dwell on the differences.

When you typed in your question, didn't you see that it has been asked countless times before?

Anyway, I am here because I my life is affected by religion even though I am not a follower. I am here because it interests me. I am here because I think it is important that people remember that atheists are people too. And, I am here for the occasional spirituality question that I can relate to.

I will often answer a question "for Christians only" if I feel I can contribute something as a human being. Also, remember most atheists here were once Christians and often are well versed in the Bible.

Well for one thing there are plenty of people who direct questions to us, so our presence may be needed in a sense.

I am here mostly because I'm bored and work and I try to clear up some very common misconceptions about atheists/agnostics as well as evolution and the sciences. It is remarkable (and I see this every day here) how many people don't understand evolution... a recent poll actually indicated the overwhelming majority of Americans can't identify the real definition of evolution if given a list - that's multiple choice!

So basically I'm here to help clarify things, correct common mistakes, and so on...

I wouldn't have the slightest interest in visiting the R&S section if all those who believed in god lived in isolation from the rest of the world. If that was the case, their beliefs or delusions would have no impact on me. But that's not the case. Because we all live in the same society with equal rights, these delusions affect everyone else directly because they play a part in determining who gets elected into office, and who gets into positions of power, and which laws get passed, which medicines can or can't be researched, and these delusions play a part in determining whether or not to go to war. In other words, these delusions directly impact my life because they play a part in shaping the world in which I live. That's why I take an interest.

I believe that life is potentially better if you figure out, as early as possible, that not only is there no god (nor a need for one), but that religions in their many forms are some of the most negative, divisive, dangerous things we humans have ever come up with.

...but I try to do it in a friendly way.

Why do people try so hard to get you to not believe in God? The same could be asked of the God fearing. But this forum is for those who have religion to debate/ask/answer other religious people. Atheist's just want you to be unhappy!

It is my purpose, in YQ&A, to teach: to share the considerable knowledge that I have acquired over a lifetime, for the benefit of anyone who pays attention. There is no more important field in which to do this than in R&S, to attempt to teach people to think for themselves, to show the benefits of doing so, and disabuse people of superstitious nonsense. The amount of time, effort, and money wasted on religion is astounding, and would be far better used in almost any other pursuit. And it would be nice to get rid of atrocities such as Iraq, Iran, Chechniya, Kashmir, Palestine, and 9/11's. For much more on this, see:

The terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center were ostensibly motivated by religious beliefs, making religion and spirituality an important topic for all Americans.

Given Christianity's historical penchant for murder, war and genocide, it is important for all people to keep an eye on believers and all forms of irrational, fundamentalist thought.
