It could be a few things:
1. It could still be a cavity even if it doesn't hurt, however I doubt it by the way you are describing it.
2. If it is in between the grooves and pits of your molars, it is probably just stain from dirt and can be removed by a dental hygienist with a prophy jet when you get your teeth cleaned.
3. If its on random places on your teeth, like smooth surfaces, it could be "black line stain". Some people get it (it usually reoccurs) and no one really knows why, but they think it might be to do with the minerals in your body. There's no cure but it can also be removed by a prophy jet.

Some black stains can be traced to food stains that have been taken by pocks/holes/tartar scales around a tooth. These food stains are coffee, tea, and herbal infusions. They are also due to nicotine from cigarettes.
Rarely ( you must be over 40) some stains are caused by some antibiotics ingested during childhood, specifically tetracycline.
A household remedy for surface stains is brushing with baking soda or toothpaste with whitener.
The dentist can tell you for sure that these discolourations are not cavities.

Those 'black stains' that are 'circular' could actually be 'cavities' beginning to form. You'll need to see a dentist and have the dentist give you the 'appropriate course of treatment.' Yes, it 'could be' an major problem, but only a dentist can tell you 'for sure' what that problem is and how to treat it.

I have something like this too. I don't know why. The dentist assistant assured me they were just coffee/tea stains but she didn't speak English very well and I'm not sure I believe her. A few weeks after she got rid of them, they came back. So hopefully someone has some idea to help us out!
I brush twice a day (for 2 minutes each time), floss daily, and use mouth wash twice a day!
