Supply and demand.
Many years ago when my wife and I were breeding Rottweilers they were considered one of the "hot" dogs.
Prices were typically either side of $1,000.00.
Now only exceptional puppies command that type of price.
Yorkies are in this class right now as are Chihuahuas. 7-8 years ago Chihuahuas were about half of what they cost now and then you were getting a much better dog.
Either move on to another breed, there are a lot of options, or wait a few years. The price will come down.

Do NOT GO TO A PET STORE!! There are breeders around that will sell them a little cheaper - no middle men.
There are also a lot of yorkies on Petfinder.org. I was amazed at how many were available for adoption. Please check there or one of the rescue organizations. I have a female that was a rescue and she is the best dog you could ever ask for. They are so grateful that you rescue them.
They do take a lot of your time as any dog will.
Please try this option - you will not regret it.

Because people like cute dogs. Yorkies still end up in shelters and rescues all over the country. Breeders breed them because they know they can charge an absurd fee and people will still pay.
Look at some rescues in your area. You should be able to find out for a lot cheaper than the price tag that breeders and puppy mills throw on them.

They have small litters, and the upkeep is pricey.
Don't let yourself be fooled by the word "teacup" either. That word alone will cost upwards of $2000, and there's certainly no guarantee the pup will stay small. You're better off finding a responsible breeder that doesn't focus so much on the tiniest, but who breeds to the AKC standards and has their health in mind. The tiniest pup may have the most health problems you've ever seen...

A well-bred dog will be expensive. But just becasue a dog is expensive doesn't always mean it's well bred.
Please familiarize yourself with the breed standard and the health issues of yorkies before you purchase one. Here's a very informative article about how to recongnize a reputable breeder to ensure you get a well-bred puppy and your money's worth.

yorkies and all tiny "purse dogs" are very trendy right now. that's one reason that breeders can charge so much. If you're looking into purebreds, that can be another reason they are so expensive. purebred dogs of any breed cost a lot of money, especially if they are akc registered.

Easy! Yorkies are small dogs that you see with celebraties all the time! Its really the market, breeders assume to a certain degree that brat celebraties will be looking for this, or just snobbish people, and thus they raise their prices on them because of the market.
To put it simply,
Rich people Buy it=Breeders want more.
Hope this helps!
