Why do people care about other people only after they're dead?

We treat each other like sh-t all the time. When a bridge collapses and some people die, everyone acts sad. But if the bridge hadn't collapsed, and if they were still alive, you would still be treating them like sh-t. So tell me, what is it about death that makes you start to care about people all of a sudden?
