you put the author's last name and page # ex (Fitzgerald 55) also see http://honolulu.hawaii.edu/legacylib/mlahcc.html and if you are then doing a works cited you should go to easybib.com...ps I hated this and I still do :-)

Others mention quotation marks, and true.
You must attribute from whom the quotes are taken.
You can do this with an asterisk " * ", after the quote, then at the end of the essay, use an asterisk followed by the name or source of the quote.
Be certain that the author has released permission to use the material. If they require permission, you must obtain that. Some give that permission in their work. Otherwise you have infringed on copyrights............and you will receive an "F" from your teacher on the essay.

You would use double quotation marks showing that you are quoting something word for word, and then inside the double quotation marks, you would use a single quotation mark showing that it was dialogue. It's called a quote within a quote.

Depends upon the length. If it is short, three sentences of less, quotation marks work. If it is long. state the source, and indent the quotation from both margins.
