Usually someone will have a paper from the state that they hand you saying they are tax exempt, or else there will be a notebook near the register with copies of that form or something filled out for each exempt organization.

As your boss how your particular shop handles it.

There are different reasons for being tax exempt. If she was purchasing the items for a church, she would be exempt. Technically if the person is tax exempt they should have a tax id number associated with their purchase in which the thrift store would use when filing their taxes. Sounds as if maybe the store is a small business and does not have an easy way of waiving the taxes so they just said to ring it up as something that wont be taxed. I dont think that's legal, but I dont think it's wrong either since it all comes out in the wash.

There are other ways someone can be tax exempt as well. Non-profit organizations, schools, etc. But they should have a tax id number that exempts them.

I agree with bosto above. I would ask your boss about it and the procedures. Also if they are tax exempt they know and once you ring up their things and give the amt due more than likely they will tell you they are.

Ask your boss. The rules are different for each state. Your boss is responsible for training you.
