Are you sure that the speakers are being driven correctly?

There is a right and wrong way to wire speakers, and if you have one correctly set with the other incorrectly set the two speakers could cancel each other out in the bass component (there's little or no stereo component in the bass).

Secondly, how have you mounted the speakers? For a speaker to operate properly, there should be as long a path as possible between the front and the back of the speaker: this again is to prevent sound cancellation.

Thirdly... what is the response curve for the speakers --- do they have a decent bass element? Most speakers are designed to cover a certain audio range and if you try to drive beyond the designed range you'll get pretty poor results.

Just because they're big doesn't necessarily make them good for any particular range.

Have you actually fitted them or are you testing in open air? The backs of the speakers should be in an enclosed space, sealed against air pressure leaking through to the front. Make sure that they are phased correctly (both cones moving in or out together; not one in, the other out).
