I want to stop drinking alcohol for the next 8 or more months. The primary reasons for this are because I need to finish school and I would like to get in better shape. I'm going on my 5th year of college and I'm in the worst shape of my life. Both have a lot to do with drinking.

The problem I forsee is that most of the social situations I participate in involve drinking, i.e. parties, bars. Most people would say to stop going out and exposing yourself to the tempation, but seriously, I'm in college. There really isn't much escaping it. Plus, I don't want to stop going out and not have a social life.

Also, I don't want to get new friends. I like who I hang out with and they will support the fact I'm not drinking (automatic designated driver) and won't pressure me into it.

So basically I would like peoples' opinions on what to drink instead of alcohol when I'm at a party or bar or what not. Water's ok, but it's boring and I'm not a big soda drinker. Any help is appreciated.

If you don't like soda you could drink fruti juice. How about having a couple of non-alcoholic beers or some non-alcoholic wine (sparkling grape juice). Though drinking a lot of those won't help you lose weight, but the odd one would be ok. You could have an energy drink or two (like Red Bull) to help you stay awake whilst partying. Most bars have really good selections of non-alcoholic drinks these days. Here in the UK a lot of bars give free soft drinks to the designated driver in a bid to cut down on drink driving.

If your friends support your decision to not drink it makes things much easier because it eliminates that pressure from your friends to drink- even if you have to be a designated driver. In my opinion if your at a party and all your buddies are drinking alchohol your not going to want to drink water (or any other non-alchoholic drink) when everyone else is taking shots and drinking beer.. You actually have to motivate yourself to stop drinking. Its so easy to give in and say "just this one last drink and i'll never do it again." It really doesn't matter what drink you have to substitute alcohol, none of them will even compare.. Just convince yourself that your going to stop doing it and don't let in. Your not going to change unless YOU yourslef wants to. Try 7 up. I know you don't like soda but in my opinion it tastes the closest to beer- it even looks like it! Good Luck.

Well, if you are at a party, you could just bring something with you, like Gatorade, or Juice or whatever. . . . My friend never drinks, and whenever she comes out with us, she just drinks seltzer water with a lime. . . .Guess it depends where you are too. If you are at a restaurant, they will probably have tons of good drinks that don't have alcohol, like smoothies and stuff, so it depends on the situation. I think you'll have to get used to the bars the hardest though. Maybe cranberry. juice with a splash of tonic water. I actually drink that a lot, because it's tasty, but with just a little fizz. . . .Good luck to you!

When I want to stay away from alcohol, but don't want others to bug me about it, I have found that drinking soda water with lime is a good choice---it looks like a hard-a** drink but it most certainly is NOT. Then you can nurse that "drink" and make vague comments like "Oh, I'm fine with this drink" Or "I'm still working on this" if people try to offer you alcohol...Good luck!

I'm not a big drinker either. I normally start with a Red Bull, gives you some energy. Then I'll have a Vitamin Water, and drink some water with lemon, or some Sprite with lemon and lime. Enjoy!

easy, drink O"Douls amber non alchoholic beer. It comes in a bottle just like beer. The first time you drink one, it isn't all that great, next time you have one, it isn't bad. third time you will enjoy it. Serve it ice cold. People think your drinking a beer, it tastes like beer. but no alcohol. I drink them at any get together where I will be driving later, or just don't want alcohol, but like you, want to enjoy the social atmosphere.

Coffee, orange juice, tomato juice and there's a variety of virgin drinks. When all else fails, 7-Up or soda with a twist. Water, also with a twist.
