I have a 7 mo. old Golden Retriever. My husband wanted a big dog. Well he got one....she's nearly 70 lbs already. I wanted a small dog (shi tzu, pomeranian, yorkie). Well, I'm still yearning for a small dog. One to sit on my lap and cuddle with. A dog I can take for walks without having my arm pulled out of its socket, etc. My Golden is quite hyper (she's getting fixed in a couple of weeks which might help). She'd never hurt the new puppy on purpose, she's just big and clumsy and very playful. Plus I'd probably baby the puppy and carry it a lot..... Is getting this new puppy a bad idea? I know there are a lot of people out there that own both a large and small dog......

When I got my puppy she weighed 3.5 pounds and loved to play with my 100lb+ yellow lab mix. They got along really well and the small dogs are tougher than you think. I don't think you should baby a small breed dog just because they are small let them walk around and play like a normal dog would. If you are worried about a small breed pup get one that is 6 months old or at least older than 8 weeks so it is bigger and can handle the new puppy better. Good Luck.

My 5 month old puppy (lab/cocker spaniel mix) loves to play with my boyfriend's family's 5 month old Pomeranian puppy and they get along well, however, my puppy is 3x the size of the Pomeranian and they do tend to play a little too rough. I'm always worried that the Pomeranian eye is going to pop out or something, ha ha! So based on that, I would say to wait until the golden is at least a year or two and calmed down a little, then you should be fine to get another pupper of a smaller variety. if you think that your golden might be fine with another smaller dog sooner, ask a friend with a small dog to bring it over or take your golden to a dog park and see how she interacts with other smaller dogs. you never know, it might not be a problem at all!

I have two large goldens - one a very active female like yours - and they do wonderful with little dogs. They have a weekly play date at a friend's house and their playmate is a shih tzu. My male dog's best friend in puppy class was a corgi. And they both play nicely with my sister's two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. My sister's son recently moved home with his golden and his dog also plays nicely with the Cavs. My dogs have played nicely with a very tiny Boston terrier - if there was any aggression at all, it came from her. They just avoided her when she was moody.

Goldens are very dog friendly and like most dog-friendly breeds, they scale their play to the size of the dog they're playing with. The funny thing is the shih tzu friend now tries to do everything the big dogs do - he reaches as far as he can so he drink from the back yard fountain and chews on big logs like the big dogs. It's really funny.

So I'd say get a shih tzu for sure - they are sturdy little dogs from my experience - and be happy and enjoy the friendship between the two dogs. Poms and Yorkies are a little more fragile - so I'd be inclined toward the shih tzu of your three choices. I'd also recommend a male since spayed female/neutered male combos usually work the best.

Of course it is possible to own a small and large dog together, however, keep in mind that a Golden puppy is A LOT of work. More work than most people realize.

They stay "puppies" until about 2 years of age...at that point they are already close to 100 lbs. And full of energy and if you haven't worked on controling this energy and putting their "drive to work" to good use...they can be a very hard dog to handle.

I would reccomend not having two puppies at the same time. (Think of it as having twin babies...possible...but easier to not)

I would focus on your golden pup, raise her up with solid manners (incl. not pulling on the leash etc), and then re-evaluate your need for another dog (and desire to go through another puppyhood)

:c) Hope this helps.

golden retrievers are too nice to hurt a little puppy. it may seem hyper now, but once another dog is in the house, it should be much better with it. =) so don't worry.

Good training trumps any issue of size everytime. Be sure both dogs get the training they need to keep their home.
