If you end your prescribed dosage too soon, it may not completely kill the bacterial infection. If that happens, the bacteria can gain immunity to that anitbiotic, and you'll have to go on stronger antibiotics for even longer. It's not worth it, and it's dangerous, as that's how super strains of bacteria are created. If you feel you were given too much, call your dentist and ask if that is what he prescribed. Odds are it's just a low strength type over a long period of time, which is better for taking care of deep infections like those in teeth.

They usually give 10 days worth. Sometimes they give a few days more.
Some low-dose antibiotics like doxycyline are too weak to act like a standard antibiotic but are prescribed for other dental issues where they are incredibly effective. When the dentist is prescribing for that it is usually for a 90 day minimum.
Take it to the end in any case (no pills left means you are done).

Standard antibiotics are given for 7 - 10 days. If you have a deep infection, they may be prescribed for up to 3 weeks. If it is being used as a preventative, the 7 - 10 days may be shorter, if they feel healing will be far enough along earlier. You should use the full amount, as stopping early may open you up to the risk of infection or reinfection.

Finish the entire prescription.
Are you concerned about the length of time, or the dosage strength?
Since you don't mention what the diagnosis is, or what the antibiotic and dosage are, we can't really advise you. Yes, the dentist may have prescribed "too much", but more information would help us determine that.

Yes! It is bad for you and everyone else. If you end it early, you risk not killing the stronger bacteria. Then they multiply and you end up with strong bacteria which may resist more antibiotics. That is how we end up with drug-resistant strains which could effect you or other people and antibiotics will not work for them. ALWAYS take the full amount of antibiotics prescribed for you!!!!!

yes,you should follow instructions and take til finished.I am on antibiotics too after having 6 extractions due to peridontal disease.I was given 21 pills and have to take 3 a day for 7 days.I will take mine til finished to be on safe side.Perhaps you should contact your dentist and inquire about the amount of pills he prescribed for you,if you are in doubt.

Your dentist wants to ensure that there will be no infection in your mouth. Take the antibiotics as directed, untill they are done, otherwise you may have to undergo another round!!! It is only a temporary situation!!!
May God bless you.

apparently it is. the dentist will have perscribed you enough to completely clear the infection. if you dont take it all, then there might still be a slight infection in your system (even though you feel recovered) and you might suffer again in the future or have some side effect.

take it till its gone - you may feel better, but if you stop before you finish it all, you may have a relapse - whatever required you to go on antibiotic could return because you didn't totally kill it by stopping too soon
