Probably 3 gallons left in the tank. You know your gas mileage. Hope it isn't like my wifes 95 Intrepid though. After her gas light comes on, if she restarts it, the engine will run but it will not move. Another Chrysler better idea I guess.

If you want an accurate answer, you have to calculate it yourself. Otherwise, 30 miles is a conservative enough estimate that you probably won't go wrong (the accurate answer will almost always be more than 30 miles, even for a Wrangler with below average fuel mileage).

As soon as the gas light comes on, fill it up with gas and note how many gallons it takes to fill it. Subtract that from the capacity of the fuel tank and you know how many gallons are left when the light comes on.

Calculate your fuel mileage by dividing the number of miles you drove since your last fill up by the number of gallons it takes to fill it up.

Multiply your fuel mileage by the number of gallons left in your tank when the light comes on and you'll have a pretty accurate picture of much further you can drive.

I'd still leave a safety margin since your fuel mileage varies depending on whether you're on a highway or sitting at stop lights burning gas while not going anywhere.

It varies slightly from one Jeep to the next. In both of my Rubicons, as well as in my previous Wrangler, it came on when about 15 gallons were gone from the tank. It's a 19 gallon tank and I average 17 MPG, so the math says I can go another 68 miles.

I drive very conservatively. More aggressive drivers get as low as 12 MPG. That gives 48 miles until empty.

As a safety margin, don't try to go over 30 miles with the light on. Of course your best option is to head for the nearest gas station when the light comes on.

To clarify the answer from a previous post, no your Jeep won't fail to start or move after the light comes on. The light simply glows yellow to remind you that you're low, and you'll hear a warning BEEEP when you start up, until you refill.

BTW, all those numbers are for highway driving. If you are in 4WD, especially in 4-Low, if the light comes on you better have a gas can ready.

Hope that helps.

Why would you drive around with the gas light on in the first place? The gas light is for those people who are either vision impaired or just don't pay attention to the gas gauge. The correct answer here is: If the gas light comes on head for the nearest gas station! Otherwise you will be calling for assiatance which will make that few gallons of gas you need very expensive!

You didn't specify which Jeep you have, but basically it depends on your fuel economy. My XJ gets better mpg than my YJ.

Then there is the factor of the type of driving you do, since highway gets better milage than city driving, etc.

As far as it takes to empty your tank.
