'A' wedge = Approach (most common) or Attack. Usually around 52 degrees. I have also seen a pitching wedge (47-50 degrees) refered to as an E (equalizer) wedge.

approach...it is known as a 'gap' wedge because it was designed to have you measured distances in shorter increments close to the green...gap because it bridges the distance gap between your pitching wedge 45*-47* and your sand wedge 54*-57*

approach wedge or attack.....it may be the most important wedge in back if your a long hitter or a bad iron player its for 75 yards and in..which is where most players are when missing the green...

Im pretty sure it could be A or B type, with a minor variation in loft.
As for me, I just like using my degrees to differentiate my wedges.
