I am a former chef and what I do is brown them in a pan until coloured, then I put a cup of water on them and a lid to steam cooked them, this extracts the fat with out spattering and once the water has evaporated I then let them brown further, sausages like a cake are hard to gauge, but if you start them off, then steam cook and brown them for 20-25 minutes they will be done in about 10 minutes more.
I like to add some onions, peppers and seasoning the last period of cooking, even a small amount of tomato sauce or spaghetti sauce for flavour, and it goes nice on a bun, or over pasta.

ITALIAN SAUSAGE CASSEROLE
8 oz. Mozzarella cheese, shredded
4 Italian sausages
1 lb. pasta noodles mostacelli, rotini, etc. (your choice)

Cook Italian sausage in oven at 400 degrees until brown. (They don't need to be cooked completely.) Boil and prepare pasta noodles as package recommends. Simmer your pasta sauce and add seasonings to taste.
Slice Italian sausage into bite size pieces. Combine sausages, tomato sauce, drained and cooked noodles, along with 4 ounces of Mozzarella. Place in a 2 quart casserole dish. Mix together thoroughly. Add remaining cheese to top. Bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees.

You can cook it just about any way you want. I wouldn't suggest boiling though. The best would be grilling or cooking in a frying pan. Frying it split it open along the length & you wouldnt even need to use any oil at all. You can also slice it & cook it in spaghetti sauce. It comes out more lile boiled but helps the sauce. Hop this helps

I either buy pre-cooked Italian sausages or boil them, if they're raw, before putting them on the grill. That way they don't have to be on very long and only need to be heated through to get that grilled flavor.

I put it whole into a pan. Cook it until it begins to get golden over medium heat, then pour marinara sauce over it and simmer for 15 minutes. The juices from the sausage flavor the sauce wonderfully. Serve with pasta.
