first he should try taking advil on a schedule. it may take a few days for the inflammation to decrease and thus the pain. it helps to use heating pads, or bengay type creams to lower the pain. ice may also make him feel better. apply ice 20 min on and then 20 min off. massage and accupuncture are also great ideas for pain management.goodluck;)michele

Has he seen a doctor? He may need a prescription pain killer but it also sounds like he might need to have a knee x-ray. If it's a torn ligament or another orthopedic problem, pain meds will only minimize and temporarilly relieve the pain, if they even work at all. He needs to see a doctor.

yes, he should see a doctor.
there are many things that can cause pain behind the knee.
he may have a circulatory problem, he may have a cyst which may need to be removed... sorry but we can't diagnose him over the internet.
without seeing him we can't tell you what he should do.
best of luck

you need to get him to his PCP....you don't say if it's constant pain, intermittent or shooting or if there are any reasons for this to be happening such as a recent fall etc....try alternating between heat and cold behind the knee
