hypothetically, to avoid it going over the edge and in doing so saved the lives of as many as 60 kids in the process, would the insurance company pay for damages to his or her truck for doing this? Say the truck driver only had third-party coverage.

The truck driver would not have hit the bus otherwise and did this in an act of altruism.

I'm well aware that this question is not factual in the case for what happened yesterday. Duh. I guess "if" and "hypothetically" aren't strong enough words for some, huh.
Not that I was so bored. It was my first thought that the truck driver had done this to save the bus, from the first photo I saw yesterday; it turned out to not be the case of course.

What about what's going through the truck driver's mind if this were the case?

I am sure that the cause of the accident is the bridge falling, so it is considered an Act of God.

The insurance companies will not argue with this one and will wind up sueing the State for the costs that they incurred.

With the bridge going like that, I doubt if anybody had much of a chance to do anything.

Dude, the truck isn't wedged against anything. The cab is hanging over the bridge... on fire.

No.. if they only have third party coverage.. they only have third party coverage.

How is the insurance company more responsible then any other good samartian for paying this good-doer back?

How woudl it be wrong of them not to? It would be just as wrong as if you or me didnt pay them for it.

Geesh. duh.

I don't know. But you should get extra points for asking the most clever question of the day.

No, they would not pay. That's just the way insurance companies work.
