I think the length of time between seeing each other is important and the projected length of the separation.
Most guys think in short term and need to think the goal is very near. The likelihood of him staying committed and interested probably would not last too long.
Hormones abound and temptations lurk. The distance also diminishes the fear-of-being-caught factor, a highly under-rated motivator with young men.
I had a long-distance relationship with a girl when I was young but we knew exactly how many days until we would be back living in the same town and we never went over two weeks without seeing each other. Talking on the phone or reading letters may help girls but it is not much help to a guy.
Unless you are thinking marriage, and I mean both of you, You might be better off agreeing to "see how it goes" and not set hard and fast rules for each other while you are apart.
By the way, that girl and I have now been married for a long long long time.

I have been in many long distance relationships. I was always faithful, but the relationships never lasted either.

Yes...I dated a girl who studied abroad for six months. It was terribly difficult, including many long-distance phone fights, but I stayed faithful...have never cheated thus far in my romantic history.
However...the relationship did not survive after the time apart...

My high school love and I dated for 4 yrs before I joined the military. I never stopped loving her the entire time and was entirely faithful. There were a lot of road trips and phone calls but we made it work.

My girl and I are 500 miles apart, and I'm faithful to her.
It's difficult NOT to feel lonely, and the thoughts of being with someone else for companionship might cross one's mind. If you are truly committed to your partner, you will have the strength to be faithful. If not, why bother with the relationship?

Yes, I'm faithful. I'm of the view that, since I care for her so much, why would I even think about being unfaithful to her? Cheating doesn't make any sense to me.

However faithful one to the other, if there is SPACE factor that seperates them, the heart will begin to wonder and look for comfort.
