But if you are describing some one as asian is not very specific if it include east asian people because Chinese and indian people are two different races. And if you don't know where someone id from you can't just say chinese or japanese because they may not be from china or japan.
last time i described someone as chinese i got the dirtiest look then they said no im vietnamese.
So i don't underestand why Oriental is seen as offensive. Political Correctness is bullSh*it.

As far as I know, "Oriental" means objects. If you don't know their nationality, "Asian" will suffice - reason being here, it's rude to assume that someone is automatically Chinese, just because they look Asian - they may be Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, etc.

One of my high school friend is Korean, and she took great offense to being referred to as "Oriental." She would tell people "rugs and vases are Oriental. People are not."

Yes. The term oriental is only to be used to describe objects. People are Asian, of Asian descent, or preferably, they should be referred to by their nationality, ex. Japanese, Chinese, Korean, etc...

Yes... Asian is more appropriate. Or Chinese, Chinese-American, etc.... But oriental is definitely not an appropriate term for people from East Asia.

i take advantage of the words whilst that's needed. It helps describe diverse Asian characteristics. FOBs are diverse from ABCs like me. yet non-asians do no longer difficulty to word the version.

Since some people would find it offensive, it would probably be best to avoid using the term.

Personally, I find ANY term referring to people of certain ethniticity offensive.

It has nothing to do with being PC or defensive, but the day we stop dividing people into these boxes is the day people can look past colour and creed.

I hate it when I look at the news and see people tagged by their colour when there is no need to. To make a big deal of someones achievements just based on the shade of their skin is demeaning.

The term PEOPLE should be universal.

It is my understanding that the term, "oriental" is only properly applied to objects, not people.

If this is true, I'm sure you can see why it would be offensive to at least some.
