Knowing boxers the dog will just be happy to have another person to love. Make sure in the year he is away that the pup has plenty of interaction with other males so s/he is used to them.

It would be just like he was a new member of the family. If you take the pup to obedience classes, he'll probably be very good at respecting people and will respect your husband, too. There is the chance that with your husband coming home and getting all the attention, the dog might get jealous and act out, but he'll get over it. But there's also the chance that he'll hit it off with your husband and they'll be the best of friends. In all, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

If you socialize it well when it's young and take it to proper puppy classes and get it exposed to new things, (like it should be), it will know that when you say your husband is "friend," the boxer will not mistake him for a burglar.
Think of it as having a long term guest in the house. If the puppy is used to having visitors in the house, it will be fine when your husband comes home.
*Thank you for your strength, and your husband's service. Hopefully this war will be ended soon.

depends on temperment of dog... I would get a female. Male boxers seem to be very dominant.

He should be fine. The dog will see that you know him and should accept him. I doubt there will be a problem.
Good luck!
