Do polite words realy have meaning? It just seems like a trick to make people more receptive to you. For example, how does saying "please" change the meaning of a request?

What do you want, " Hey you gimme some soup!"
to a waiter. I hope not

"May I have the soup and ----- " makes life more pleasant and relaxed it does not cause resentment.

You must have seen a situation in which a polite request has produced a smiling and willing response and an order to the same person caused only resentment.

It's called mutual respect and yea polite words do make a difference

I agree that an Order is sometimes the only way but not that often

It shows some consideration by taking the time to use polite words and some respect for the person you are speaking to. Non-verbal cues and voice tone are more important in accompanying polite words to show meaning.

I think because you have been asked by your parents, teachers, older people to always say please why should you stop when you become an adult.

Manners are the making of people and I think people need to use manners towards each other every day. Just makes the world a better place and you never know the chav like children of today may start using manners.

You get more when you treat people kindly. While using polite ways of getting what you want, people will be more likely to give you what you want. Try being rude and getting good service, it doesn't work!
I like to be treated with respect, and 'polite words' go hand in hand with it.

Hi
What country do you originate from? I find it hard to believe you're ancestors were British, this is something that's built into the Psyche of every true British person, it's just natural to us to have manners, it's one of the things that sets us apart from other countries.

Because if you use polite words you are not perceived as rude and ignorant, and people respond to you better if you are polite.

"Please" shows respect and makes YOU appear less dictatorial. "Please" makes it a request, rather than a demand.

"Please" also makes the person feel appreciated, and consulted.

You can decide to leave the "niceties" out of your language, but you will definitely not have as quality a living experience as you could.

When you show people you respect them enough to be polite they are far more likely to go the distance for you and beyond.

Compliance is your goal.

Compliance PLUS is mine. You just never know what PLUS might include, only for the effort of saying "Please".

being polite shows people respect. With that respect its easier to have them do something or be nicer to you. It also shows what kind of person you are. If you demand something humans automatically like to fight against it.

to not cause offence. it shows respect.

personally though, i think people like having a choice and thinking they are in charge so by saying please you make them think they are in charge and have a choice so if they said no the whole world would end. and even when they say no, they are sorely disappointed that the floor hasn't opened up and swallowed the whole world.

being polite and saying please gives you a reason to hate them when they say no =D

i just think people don't talk sense =D
