She took money out of peoples bank accounts after their relatives came in to inform the bank that they had died. Not such which type of theft this is? As the bank paid the money back to the customers it could be theft from employer.

I think that in view of the large amount of money involved, this case will be heard in the Crown Court and there is likely to be a custodial sentence. Your old friend was in a position of trust, she carried out a system of stealing over a long period of time and she took advantage of people at their most vulnerable, i.e. after they had been bereaved. She has pleaded guilty, which must be taken into account in sentencing, but it is impossible to say how long the sentence is likely to be. She will also be required to pay compensation of this large amount of money. She will never be able to work in banking or any similar field again, as this conviction will have to be declared to any employer within the financial services industry.

The common law has adequate provisions to deal with such criminal acts! In a country like China though, such offences are dealt with rather harshly, maybe including capital punishment! For instance, recently, a high-powered communist party official has been stripped of all powers for mishandling public funds and is facing trial may lead to the extreme punishment!

I would guess that she is looking at a prison sentence. This may be suspended if the money was returned.
I say this because your friend was in a position of trust which makes the offence more serious. Also the amount of money stolen is quite high.
Also it depends which judge she has. Some are clearly more lenient than others.

Similar thing happened to the accountant at my sisters work, he admitted his guilt, they took him to court, I think he got a suspended sentance, community service, his wife left him and he ended up with a cr@p job in Pizza Hut, so not worth it, she may have topay back the money! But that was years ago and this is a bank, maybe different charges.

She was in a position of trust . First offence or not thre Court will take a dim view of it and she will go down, it will be slighly taken into account that she has pleaded guilty fairly immediately

It sounds like it will be a pretty harsh charge. Bank fraud is a federal law.
As far as her getting full punishment? She'll probably serve 10-15 years in a federal detention facility.

60K?? Prison is almost a certainty.
Probably 2-3 years.
Might be lucky and get a suspended sentence but doubt it.
