I'm cat sitting for my Dad for the next few weeks. Over all the cat seems fine except I'm noticing the his stools are kind of loose (like toothpaste) and yesterday one had bright red blood in it. Should I be concerned? Should I take the cat to the vet?

Of course you should be concerned. Get the cat to the vet right away. This could be a symptom of many things. You need to find out the cause and treat it right away.

Loose stools could indicate that he is coming down with something. As far as blood, it could be any of a number of things, but if it happens just a couple of times, and no more, it can be due to stress. Yes, stress, since by you coming in to cat sit, you have changed his world. It is hard to say without more information if by your cat sitting has resulted in him feeling stress. If the litter box issues continue, then a vet visit would be advised. An occasional soft stool is not too troubling, as it could be a reaction to what he ate.

Fresh blood means bleeding from the colon. If the bleeding occurs in the stomach or the small intestine, then the blood would be digested and tar-like, black.

The most common cause for colon bleeding is colitis. It usually is not a very serious condition and resolves with 24h starvation followed by a chicken and rice diet.

However, If this has been going on for several days, a trip to the vet is necessary to get the cat check over.

He needs a trip to the vet. He may have eaten the wrong thing. Red blood in the stool is usually not extremely serious since it means the stool is picking up the blood on the way out. If the blood were black, for instance, that would be a sign of internal bleeding somewhere along the digestive tract.

The looseness is another clue.

It could be worms, stress, or if you changed foods from what the cat is used to eating. Just to be sure I would at least take him to the vet or call the vet to see if they will check a stool sample for you for worms. Worming the cat defiantly won't hurt. If you decide to do that without a vet trip keep a close eye on the cat. Diarrhea can cause dehydration, and some times if the cat has worms when you worm it it can make the diarrhea worse till the worms are gone.

Also it could be that whatever food the cat is on he is allergic to. Some foods have dyes, preservatives and other things that can give sensitive cats diarrhea.

It could be a number of things. If it was only one time that you saw the blood, then, I would say he will be alright. If it's every time the cat poops, well, then, it's time to worry.

If the cat is acting fine, not in pain and eating well. I'd say he is okay. If he's acting like he is in pain or just laying around sleeping, being lethargic. That's when it's time for worry.

To ease your mind tho, call your dad's veterinarian for advise. If you can talk with them and find out more that would be best. They will be the ones to tell you to bring him in for a check up.

I hope this advice helps!

Yes. Blood in stool isn't normal. You should take a small sample in a container and ask the vet to examine it. Your cat might have internal bleeding (sorry if I'm wrong).

If the cat's diet has not changed to anything that would irritate his stomach, then I would suspect he has worms, visible or not. Yes, a trip to the vet is absolutely in order. Ask about having the cat dewormed.
