Ground beef should smell fresh and meaty, not sour. 12 hours is to long to leave raw meat unrefrigerated. I wouldn't want to take a chance with my family's heath, so I'd toss it out.
After all, isn't someone's health worth more than the price of a pound or two of ground beef?

I did this the other day , I took my meat out frozen in the early evening and accidentally left it out all night because I to love my crock pot and I use it like crazy.
I was worried about whether to cook it or not. As long as it was frozen solid wen you took it out and it didn't get hot and start to smell sour when you were ready to cook it then it is fine. Meat doesn't smell good any way but it would have a smell that would be un settling. I just cooked it on high until brown and then added it to my sauce in the crock pot. No one got sick and about 6 people ate my spaghetti sauce. hope that helps .

Ground beef should smell clean and have no real odor to it. But in today's world with E. Coli and other health scares, I wouldn't even attempt to use ground beef that set out all night. It is just too risky to try it.

You wouldn't be able to smell if bacteria developed overnight. If the meat was frozen, I think you're OK. Just make sure you set your crock-pot on "high", that should kill any possible contamination.
If the meat was fresh, but not frozen and set out all night, I would toss it.
Did it feel warm to the touch or was it still nice and cold this morning?

It should be ok. Ground beef does smell gross to begin with, if it's excessive then i would throw it out.

It should really not have a smell at all, or very little. 12 hours is probably to long I would not use it myself.

If it was frozen solid to start with, you may be OK.
I would brown it first in some oil to kill any bacteria.
Slow cooking may only cause them to develop.
