No that advice does not sound right - it sounds ludicrous!
A dog can't digest metal. The metal can cut her internally, causing horrendous problems. Of course a vet can help - they can xray to find out where the can is, and then they can get it out before it causes too much damage!
Call another vets to get some proper advice. And when it's all sorted, call the original vet and tell them they're morons and should be struck off.

Can metal damage her internally?? Let me think... If I were to run my finger over the edge of a torn can, would it cut my finger.. Why YES, it would.. Hmmm.. Yes I believe that eating a tin can could very well damage the dog internally..
Just so you know.. I am NOT a vet, this is only my opinion.. But I think that a metal can inside the belly of a dog, would be something that I would consider a pretty big problem.. Your vet is an idiot.. I would get a new one.. Unless your dog is part goat, this is a problem that should be taken care of.

Call another vet the edges of a pop can can become sharp if the can was dented or anything. You need to watch the dog extremely carefully to try to prevent any internal damages by a sharp edged piece of metal. Keep calling vets and find one that will help you. Good Luck!!

I would take your dog to the vets immediatly. The metal will give the dog poisoining and it will not go through the small intestione therefore will get stuck and cause her to suffocate. It will also mean she cannot digest food or water. It will also cut her insides and she will bleed internally, which can cause death. The vet does not seem to be worried but this is serious. Take the dog straight to the vets and she will need an operation. (another vets)

I agree with those below who indicated that you should call another vet. A soda can is definitely not passable, and if it doesn't cause actual damage to you friend's dog's digestive system, it will almost certainly cause a blockage.
Sadly enough, a blockage can kill your friend's dog, so I would recommend taking your dog into a vet right away. If it's after five, look in the phone book for your nearest emergency vet, and take your friend's dog there.
Good luck!

Oh my gosh. I would call another vet. I know for broken glass it's recomended that you feed them a few cotton balls, which are supposed to capture the glass shards and make easier digestion....but I'd think the metal would be different since the pieces are probably bigger.
Poor guy, I hope everything comes out OK. I would deffinately demand x-rays. And keep a close eye on his poo, if this doesn' t pass it could cause a blockage if nothing else.

My dog did the same thing once. The vet told me to bring him down immediately which I did. He gave him an xray and kept him over night to monitor him. Luckily he passed it next day. But the vet said it could have caused serious damage

Even if she doesn't get cut to shreds she will absorb some of the metals into her blood stream (aluminium poisoning) which can cause organ failure. Vet needed asap.
Did you actually see her swallow the can? she might have just chewed on it for a while then hid it.

She needs to be x-rayed - and fast!!!
If she ate a metal can, it could be stuck anywhere, I can't believe the vet would say to do nothing, the metal could indeed cut her intestines up very badly.
She needs help - now.
