That and I think the fact that we have things like video cameras that can get actual PROOF of events (unlike earlier religions, which basically were "I saw it happen, so it did")

Wiser now? I'm not so sure of that. I wouldn't say we are less wise but it's incorrect to equate knowledge with wisdom.
Your question, though, is a very interesting one in my opinion. I have asked on this board a similar question regarding how a being could "prove" they are God.
Personally, I think that a) if God exists and b) if it sent a prophet to earth, the vast majority of people would reject him or her as a prophet because of our conditioned biases. Some people might follow the alleged prophet and would form what would be known as a cult. I'm pretty sure that's the way it would go down.

There are plenty of cults out there revolving around someone who claims to be a prophet ... cults like those of Jim Jones and David Koresh. People are still as gullible as they ever were, despite the more openness of our society.

I believe anyone who speaks convincingly can get someone to believe in what they say...So sure. A prophet could appear today and get a bunch of people to follow him/her. L. Ron Hubbard founded Scientology sometime back in the 1950s (I am not exactly sure on the date) look at how many people follow that...

Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.
There is a prophet today, Gordon B. Hinkley.

I think if he were lucky, he could escape the label of "delusional". But, yes, he would have to show a miracle to convince people now, or at least, convince me.

One thing history is shown us is that human nature doesn't change.
Human beings are still chumps, by and large; and there will always be people who try to exploit that fact.
