First off- if you like tiny dogs just say that. If you're a Paris Hilton wannabe just say that. You can't use the excuse that you live in an apartment to buy a sickly runt (there's no such thing as a teacup- runts bred with runts to create tiny cute dog who can have millions of health problems- dogs should be bred for quality, and health- not size) from an irresponsible backyard breeder (No decent breeder breeds teacup anythings- the AKC doesn't recognize teacup anythings). I will be moving to an apartment soon with my 21lb beagle mix. He'll be fine. There are people who have 100lb dogs in apartments- they need to be walked, they need dog parks, but it is doable.
If you want a toy dog buy a toy dog from a responsible breeder (google whatever breed you want and 'club of america' for a lit of responsible breeders). Or adopt one from a rescue or shelter (there are lots of tiny cute dogs in shelters) - try petfinder.com. If you need a calm dog- then adopt a dog who is at least a year old- they are much calmer then. Any small year old or older dog is pretty much what you are looking for...

Most breed registries do not recognise the term "teacup" - why?? because typically these dogs are either runts or dogs stunted from poor genetics or poor breeding - they are riddled with health issues and have shorter life spans.
small dogs are not neccessarily easier than big dogs - some are more active than big dogs (eg a Jack Russell Terrier is about 5 times harder to care for than a Golden Retreiver)
Shih Tzu is probably your best bet but they must go to the groomer every 6 weeks - and require regular brushing or they will devlop pain full mats in their hair... they are calm - adopt an adult rather than a pup as it will be house trained (hopefully) and not as hyper..
generally cats are better in apartments than dogs - because eventually you will get sick and who will give the dog its walks/bathroom breaks - a cat can stay indoors all the time..
Make sure you have landlord approval to get a pet.
perhaps wait till you move out - then get one..

There really are no "teacup" dogs persay. If a person advertises a dog as being "teacup" there is no assurance that that dog will not grow to being a full size. Good small dogs would be malteses, yorkies, chiuauas, shitz tzu's. Put in a yahoo search for small dogs :) I hope this helps.

tea cup dogs are bred down to that size and often hae serious health issues. Dogs that are 2-5 lbs as adults often have heart murmurs which shorten their lives. if a bone breaks, it can't be properly repaired. and it's just not a healthy situation for these poor pups. tea cup dogs are also called that as a way for breeders and pet stores to get the runt of the litter sold. often the runt has inadiquate nutrition in it's first stage of life and will continue to have health issues. if you want a small dog chihuahuas, maltese and toy poodles often don't grow beyond 7 lbs which is great for apartment living. I have a 6 lb chihuahua and a 10 lb shi-tzu and they are super cute, you can dress them up, they don't poop much and are totally healthy.

Get a Pomeranian. Teacup is just a term used to describe really little toys. It's not a true type of dog like toy. Breed standard for Pomeranians is 3-7 pounds. They are small and great apartment dogs. Poms are VERY smart, easily trained, and very loving.

Small dogs aren't really calm. Most are high strung and bark at anything that startles them. But I would go with a pooble. They are smart, don't shed, and generally loving animals
