I am 15 years, 6 feet tall. I did notice variations in growth of my height in a month over a year. Usually when I am engaged in basketball activity and eat a lot my height increases much more than when I just sit home(like exmination time). I am basketball player and play a lot during vacations and notice increase in height than busy school days.
I am already the tallest in my family(dad-5'8", mom5'2") and amongst my relatives.

Ur genes and ur food intake more particularly proteins.

Eat only when hungry and not more than thrice a day. Nothing other than water in between. Include plenty of uncooked vegetables and fruits in each meal, preferably 50%. Chew each morsel at least 32 times to activate ur body to generate signals of hunger/fullness. Obey these signals.

Take light exercises and brisk walks regularly preferably twice a day.

U will achieve what u have not even dreamt and that too in a reasonable time. Do not be in a hurry.

Unfortunatley nothing other than your DNA makes your height. It's probably that you noticed your growth at those particular times (can change weight) but didn't affect your growth rate. You are genetically programmed to be a certain height in your life and will probably grow until that peak. (Some people grow into their 20's, others stop in their teens.) Good luck with basketball!

The ultimate height achieved by a human being is dependent on quite a complex mix of factors, both genetic, environmental, and physiological. In theory, humans could grow infinitely if our metaphyseal plates, which are the sources of bone growth, did not close and stopped growing at the end of puberty. Alternatively, we could also grow excessively if the rate of growth before the end of puberty was significant. Believe it or not, the determination of a person's final height ultimately plays with these two features of bone growth.

Everyone knows that a child's ultimate height, barring any medical conditions that affect growth, is really already predetermined genetically, and, predictably, a close average of the parental heights. A commonly used formula would be:

Male Expected Height = Average of parental heights (cm) + 6.5 cm
Female Expected Height = Average of parental heights (cm) - 6.5 cm

This reflects the genetic makeup of the human framework with regards to both hormonal secretion, beginning of puberty, growth rate of bone, etc ,etc. However, this is no news to you most likely; the interestint stuff lies with individual variability amongst a tremendous number of factors.

One of the most important hormones playing a role in human growth is, you've guessed it, Growth Hormone. In normal settings, growth hormone mostly allows you to achieve your height potential, not necessarily overcome it. It is only when you have a derrangement of human growth hormone production that you can have the extremes of height. Gigantism, a medical condition in which there exists an over-production of growth hormone from a pituitary tumor, is characterized by excessive height. Some of these individuals have broken records as some of the tallest individuals ever to exist. Standing in sharp contrast are individuals with the condition known as Laron Dwarfism, in which there is an inability of the body to respond to growth hormone. These individuals will feature significantly decreased height.

Growth hormone can affect the rate of growth, as well as somewhat affecting the rate of closure of the metaphyses (the sites of bone growth). However, other hormones can cause the metaphyses to close sooner than expected, preventing further growth. Conditions in which there is premature puberty, usually characterized by an over-production early on of sex steroids, either from an adrenal derrangement, pituitary overfunction, or secreting tumors, there is an early closure of these plates, and bone growth ends prematurely. These individuals will grow fast early on, and therefore will be much taller than their age-matched classmates. However, this is soon overcome during everyone else's normal puberty, in which they have amassed quite alot more bone growth potential and can now grow taller than that individual.

Many chromosomal conditions, such as Turner's Syndrome, Down's Syndrome, and Prader-Willi, all have decreased height as a result of various alterations in the normal growth pattern.

Finally, psychosocial factors can also affect height. One cannot ignore the impact of psychosocial and nutritional stresses on height potential. Children who are abused and/or neglected display a condition known as "psychosocial dwarfism", in which the height potential is not attained.

It is probably coincidental that you had growth spurts when you were playing basketball.

But your height is determined by genetics and nutrition.
