Certain professions should be held to a higher standard? For example Christians (or other religious folks) would expect to be able to trust their preacher/priest more than the average person on the street. Most trust a doctor more than a midwife for medical treatment. So why should we overlook their profession and only look at their actions when their profession is one that commands a certain amount of respect (at least in the field of their expertise)?

Interesting question. I think it has to do with our expectations of certain professions, the education required to be a "professional" and the ethics of each profession. No one expects a car salesman to be scrupulous or honest, though I'm sure many are. But we freak out if our doctor is unethical. Perhaps because doctors have chosen a profession to heal people and it really irks us when they are more in it for the money, or expediency. When it comes to clergy, that's even more dicey. They have so much power over their congregations - emotional and mental power - that in many cases whatever they say, people will believe. That is a huge responsibility and one that some don't take as seriously as they should.

That's true.Preachers and priests or their equivalent in other religions, are held in a higher esteem in places or societies where they are of a higher or a better intellectual caliber, deportment and persona than the people they serve. like country side.rural areas ,backward or under developed countries etc.In the big cities or well developed societies where people question all symbols of authority and position[respect].priest/preachers are no exception.Yes,I agree that they should be respected at least for their expertise if not for their personal life.Alas,we human beings have not yet learn t to appreciate such finer points of life.

Absolutely.
1 Tim. 3:1-5 Faithful is the Word: If anyone reaches out to overseership, he desires a good work. Then it behooves the overseer to be without reproach, husband of one wife, temperate, sensible, well-ordered, hospitable, apt at teaching, not a drunkard, not contentious, not greedy of ill gain, but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous, ruling his own house well, having children in subjection with all honor. (For if a man does not know to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)
