The bridge collapse in Minnesota made me think of this...
I've heard before that if your car ends up going into deep water, that you will probably not be able to open the car doors because of the water pressure. I heard that to escape from your submerged car, you would need to roll down the windows.

That was fine back in the days when cars had cranks to roll the windows down, but now, all the windows have electronic push button controls. Those controls probably won't work if your car is underwater. Is there some way to get the windows down in that sort of emergency? Or should we just be carrying something heavy to smash our windows with in emergencies?

The best tool for breaking a window is a spring loaded center punch. You just push it against the glass and the spring action will break the window with very little effort.

Do not break the window, or open the door until you are free of your seat belt and in a position to get out of the car. As soon as the glass breaks, the car will be filled with rushing water!.

Get in place and take a deep breath. Break the glass
as soon as the water fills the car you want to start swimming out!!

This is a spring loaded center punch!

I have heard that the electric windows actually do work underwater, but I found that hard to believe. If you wait for the car to fill with water, you can open the door to get out. That's not as scary as it sounds, because you'll have air in the top of the car until just before it fills up. Or, like folks suggested, get one of those tools with a pointy thing to break the window on one side and a seatbelt cutter on the other. That is one of my dad's proudest possessions for some reason.

They actually make an emergency tool to keep in the glove box for just this type of thing. It has a handle like a hammer, and on one side of the head is a ball-peen type hammer to smash the window out. The other side is a sharp knife-type thing to cut the seatbelt if it's stuck.

capability abode windows are a great problem while their freeze up. The window regulator will wreck very fairly under those situations. in maximum circumstances, the electrical powered motor will strip the plastic "belt" that pulls the window up and down. in case you may warmth them with a hair dryer, you may loose them up, yet is looks such as you will have already broken the window regulator.

Grab something solid or sharp and bust out one of the windows. Usually something sharp, like a screwdriver, will suffice in breaking the window.

Its funny that you ask that question---because that is one of my biggest fears, that I will end up in the water somehow in my car,,don't know why....but there is something out there that you can buy called a punch(?) or something like that, that will shatter your car window in instances like that..i think alot of police carry something like it also
