I'm using the magnetic lasso to cut the background out of clip art. I want to use that image in a Powerpoint presentation however whenever I save it as a JPEG and pull it up it has the background again.

1. Double-click on the Background layer in the Layers palette and rename it. This allows you to have transparency behind the background layer.
2. Select the part of the image you want to keep.
3. Go to Select > Inverse. Press Delete and all that should be left is what you want over a checkerboard pattern that represents transparency.
4. Go to File > Save for Web... and choose PNG-24 in the Presets and make sure Transparency is checked. If you have an image with very simple flat colors (no complex gradients), use PNG-8. JPEGs do not support transparency.

I think kokopelli has solved this for you, but if you cutting the images out I gather you don't want any background (ie a transparent background)

jpg doesn't support transparency so if you save them as a jpg the background will be white

save them as a .gif or .png once you have removed the background in photoshop. then when you add them to your power point just the bit you cut out will show

hope this helps

Maybe you are not really cutting it out and deleting it. Select the background area and click on 'cut' in the edit tab. you should see the checkerboard pattern in the background now. Make sure your background layer in the palette is the color you want, then click on 'flatten image' in the layer tab. The checkered background should be replaced with the color background color, and the layers panel should show one layer. Simply save this out as a jpg image and you will be fine.
