Moses's life can be divided into three forty's. First: 40 years of growing and learning until he went to the Israelites. Second: 40 years as a shepherd with the Midianites. Third: 40 years leading the Israelites in the desert.
He also went on the mountain for 40 days when receiving the ten commandments, and sent the spies to Canaan for 40 days. After they entered the promised land the Israelites were "delivered into the hands of the Philistines" for 40 years.
