The ancients looked to the heavens and saw what they perceived to be gods. There are seven heavenly bodies that anyone watching the heavens will notice are different from the rest.
All early people had access to the skies, so they all saw a fixed group of stars in the heavens (the real stars), and seven heavenly bodies that moved amongst the other stars. Those must be the most powerful gods, they figured. Sun and Moon obviously stand out from the others, and there are entire religions in history based on worship of the Sun or Moon. (Look up Egypt, for starters). The others are "wandering stars", because they look like the other stars, but they wander around amongst the real stars.

In Spanish, the days of the week:
domingo - Sunday - Sun
lunes - Monday - Moon
martes - Tuesday - Mars
miercoles - Wednesday - Mercury
jueves - Thursday - Jove
viernes - Friday - Venus
sabado - Saturday - Saturn
You can look up more details by looking up "origins of days of the week", "ancient gods", "roman gods", "greek gods", etc.
Note that sabado is related to the word "sabbath".
The other planets are too far away to be easily recognized.

In Christianity, the universe in a perfect state was created in 7 days (including God's day of rest). Plus, God said remember the seventh/Sabbath day and keep it holy. If God chose to place that day above others it must have something to do with 7th since that is the only difference between that day and the others (you know the whole symbolic of the creation week idea), so since God took 7 days to create His perfect universe and commands the 7th day and 7 year (year of Jubilee) be set aside as special, there must be something special about 7 - something we'll probably never understand in this lifetime.

I love Iron Maiden by the way!
The number 7 isn't so much sacred, it's just a number that represents God in His "fullness", or completeness.

In ancient Hebrew (and others) numerology, 7 meant completeness or perfection or fullness. Prollly because it is a prime number.
6, being one less than 7 represented incompleteness, imperfection, etc, therefore triple imperfection, 666, became the symbol of the anti-Christ.
