A muffler like car muffler, only very small, is installed on the front of the gun.

"billyjack" has given the approximate construction of the muffler.

It is called silencer, and some have, flash eliminator also. If the person uses a smokeless powder in the bullet, then there is no smoke also.

Most silencers work by allowing the pressurized gases in the barrel to slowly expand before they exit the muzzle of the weapon, making less sound as gases rush out slowly. It is like slowly opening a soda can and hearing a hissing sound rather than a pop. Some silencers are designed in the same way as motorbike silencers.

Silencer works by muffling the sound created by firing of gun powder. It is an extended pipe (6' to 12' long) attached to the muzzle of the pistol or gun. It also has large holes at regular pitch (distance).

The holes allow the compressed air (due to exploding of gun powder) diffuse to the atmosphere instead of a concentrated wave, thus reducing the bang sound. Thus although the bullet is fired at the regular speed, the sound waves are intermixed and leave the muzzle and sound muffler at very low velocity, thus suppressing the sound.

A silencer is really a noise suppressor. It works on the principle of creating an expansion chamber for the escaping gases.

It only works with subsonic ammunition, as supersonic bullets create their own noise in flight.

a sound supressor works by bleeding off gases form the gun powder...a supressor is nothing more than a tube with holes drilled into it and each hole is enclosed in a chamber and in the chamber there are material that trap the gases..like copper mesh. good luck..
